Alzheimer's sufferers expected to cost taxpayer more

20 April 2011, Caroline Mason

The Alzheimer's Society today stated that unnecessary admissions of those suffering with dementia into care homes and hospitals will mean that taxpayers will increase by £70m per month. And this is due to lack of support for carers for everyday tasks such as shopping, washing and dressing.  There are 750,000 dementia patients in the UK and this is expected to rise as the population ages.  The cost is £20bn a year.
The care minister, Paul Burstow, has stated that there is no need for new money; just better use of existing resources.  "We are already at European levels but not achieving the right results".
The Alzheimer's Society study, based on feedback from carers, health workers and patients - has criticised the home support available even thought it provides better outcomes for the sufferer.
